The four constraints that shape your choice.

Most food and beverage brands don't lose on pick rate — they lose because the 3PL isn't built for the operational shape of the category.

Temperature zones

Ambient, chilled (2–8°C), frozen (-18°C). Many F&B brands need at least two zones. Most general 3PLs only offer ambient.

HACCP & food safety

Your 3PL should be HACCP-certified or operating to HACCP-aligned standards with documented procedures. Pest control, temperature monitoring, allergen management, traceability.

Best-before / use-by FEFO

Like supplements, F&B is FEFO not FIFO. Short-life products (yoghurt, fresh juice, pre-packed meals) need WMS-level FEFO with alerting on near-expiry stock.

Cold-chain freight handoff

Outbound freight for chilled / frozen goods needs reefer trucks or insulated boxes with tracked transit. The 3PL must hand off to a cold-chain-compliant carrier, not standard parcel.

What you should be paying.

F&B pricing is 20–40% above ambient for chilled storage and 50–80% above for frozen. Pick rates often include a 'cold zone surcharge' of $0.30–$0.80 per pick. Total economics work best when the volume is high enough to commit dedicated cold space.

What we see in food and beverage audits: We see early-stage F&B brands using ambient 3PLs to save money on products that genuinely need chilled storage. The first stock-quality complaint costs more than a year of correct cold storage.

What to look for.

  • HACCP certification or HACCP-aligned audit on file
  • Multi-zone storage with documented temperature monitoring
  • FEFO baked into pick workflow with near-expiry alerting
  • Cold-chain carrier relationships with documented transit standards
  • Recall protocol tested in the past 12 months

What to walk away from

Avoid 3PLs that say 'we have a chiller' without showing you the food-safety system. A walk-in chiller without HACCP procedures behind it is a liability, not a capability.

"Cold-chain 3PL pricing reflects real cost, not margin. The hidden cost is the brand that uses ambient warehousing for products that should be chilled."
