The four constraints that shape your choice.
Most supplements brands don't lose on pick rate — they lose because the 3PL isn't built for the operational shape of the category.
Listed and Listed Assessed medicines need lot-level traceability. Your 3PL must be able to pick by lot, hold lot data on every outbound shipment, and recall by lot in 24 hours.
Standard FIFO isn't enough. Supplements move on expiry date — typically 18–24 months from manufacture, often shorter on liquid or probiotic SKUs. Your 3PL must support FEFO at the WMS level, not as a manual exception.
Probiotics, omega oils, some vitamin liquids and any TGA item with a 'store below 25°C' instruction need climate-controlled warehouse zones. Most generic 3PLs don't have validated cool zones.
You need batch-level inbound records (manufacturer, batch, expiry, supplier COA) attached to each receipt. This becomes your traceability spine if there's a recall or TGA query.
What you should be paying.
Supplements pick & pack rates run 5–10% above the AU median because of FEFO complexity and lot data overhead. Expect storage to be at the higher end of the city range, especially in 3PLs offering validated cool zones — these typically charge $4–$8/pallet/month premium.
What we see in supplements audits: We see brands paying retail-grade pick rates at non-TGA-aware 3PLs and absorbing the recall risk themselves. The math reverses the moment a single batch issue forces a recall — one mishandled recall costs more than a year of premium pick rates.

What to walk away from
Avoid generic 3PLs that say 'we can do FEFO' without showing you the WMS workflow. The first time it matters is during a recall — that's the wrong moment to discover it doesn't work.
"The right supplements 3PL is a partner in your TGA compliance, not a vendor of pick & pack. Choose accordingly."
