The Chemist Warehouse model.

Chemist Warehouse runs central DCs feeding 600+ stores across AU and NZ. The supplier model is centralised — almost all volume goes through DC, not direct to store. Trading is via the Chemist Warehouse Connect supplier portal with EDI integration.

Categories: TGA-listed supplements, OTC pharmaceuticals (Schedule 2, 3 where applicable), beauty/cosmetics, personal care, baby goods, health electronics. Each has slightly different operational requirements — TGA listed products need lot traceability that's stricter than general FMCG.

EDI and trading.

Standard EDI X12 stack: 850 (PO), 855 (ack), 856 (ASN), 810 (invoice). VAN connectivity via SPS, TrueCommerce, B2BE. ASN timing 4 hours before DC slot, similar to other major AU retailers.

Lot-level data on the ASN is critical for TGA-listed products. The EDI 856 should include lot, manufacture date, expiry/best-before for every line.

TGA and lot traceability.

TGA-listed supplements and OTC products require lot-level traceability throughout the supply chain. Your 3PL must capture lot at receipt, hold it on every outbound shipment, and execute recall by lot within 24 hours.

FEFO (First Expiry First Out) picking, not FIFO. Near-expiry alerting at 60 and 30 days. Documented inbound QA capturing manufacturer batch + COA + expiry.

Palletisation and labelling.

GS1 SSCC pallet labels mandatory. ITF-14 carton barcodes Grade C minimum. CHEP/Loscam pool pallets accepted. Standard pallet limits.

TGA-listed products may have additional storage requirements (cool zone for some supplements, specific orientation for some liquids). Confirm SKU-level handling rules before first dispatch.

Common chargebacks.

Late ASN: $300–$500. Late DC delivery: $500–$1,000. Lot data missing on ASN: $200–$500 (for TGA-listed). Short shipment: $200+ plus product cost. FEFO violations (older expiry shipped after newer): can cause range removal — far worse than fines.

What to demand from your 3PL.

TGA-aware operations with lot-level WMS, FEFO picking, and recall protocol tested in last 12 months. Active Chemist Warehouse trading relationship — not 'we can set it up'.

Cool/cold storage zones for SKUs that need them (probiotics, fish oil liquids, some beauty creams). Documented inbound QA for batch + COA capture.

Frequently asked

Is Chemist Warehouse harder than Coles?
Operationally similar in core trading. The TGA and lot-traceability layer makes it harder for 3PLs that aren't supplements/health-aware. Pick the right 3PL and the difficulty is manageable.
Do I need TGA listing to sell to Chemist Warehouse?
For supplements and OTC products yes — your products must be on the ARTG before Chemist Warehouse will trade. Beauty and personal care without therapeutic claims doesn't require TGA listing.
How long does onboarding take?
8–14 weeks typical, longer if your 3PL doesn't already trade with Chemist Warehouse. The TGA/lot layer adds complexity — budget extra time for SKU master setup and EDI testing on lot data.
